In life, we all have circumstances that we wish we could change. Sometimes difficult circumstances are the result of our own choices, but other times we have no control on our circumstances. Most people want to avoid tough situations because this is human nature. But there are people who face situations with a positive attitude and such people will rise above their circumstances.
We are going to meet a man in the Bible who overcame his circumstances by faith in God and power of prayer. His name is Jabez and his story is found in 1 Chronicles 4:9 -10 “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.”
The name Jabez literally means “pain” or “sorrow”. This is a strange name to be given to a newborn child, but his mother gives the reason: “I gave birth to him in Pain.” So, from birth Jabez face distressing circumstances. Everyone thought his life would be a failure. But he proved that they were wrong. We read in the text “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.” He changed his story. In spite of a rough start in life, he was different from everyone else. How? He prayed to the God of Israel. Jabez believed that God is a prayer answering God and nothing is impossible for Him. Jabez knew his only hope for deliverance from his present situation was God and he prayed to God in faith.
This is the best of the story. “And God granted him which he requested.” (1 Chronicles 4:10). In the eyes of many, Jabez was a failure, born in sorrow and distress. But God was so gracious to Jabez and He granted what he prayed for. You may be going through some difficult circumstances such as health problems, financial difficulties, troubled relationships etc. No matter how painful your circumstance may be, God has a plan for each and every situation. You may not be able to determine how things started but through prayer you can change your story. That is the power of prayer.
